Earlier this month, Starbucks set off a nationwide frenzy with the release of a new item, and it isn’t a coffee drink. The chain’s $29.95 limited-edition, bear-shaped cup, meant to hold cold drinks like iced lattes or matchas, prompted shoppers to line up outside stores as early as 4 a.m., hoping to snag one.
Unfortunately, many customers left disappointed after learning that the adorable “Bearista” cups had sold out within minutes, sparking a wave of viral TikToks that show everything from in-store meltdowns to one shopper saying she shelled out
to buy the cup off of someone who snagged one first. Police were even called to a Starbucks store in Houston when a brawl broke out over the bear cups.
The outcry grew so loud that Starbucks issued a statement acknowledging the chaos.“The excitement for our merchandise exceeded even our biggest expectations… Despite shipping Bearista cups to coffeehouses than almost any other merchandise item this holiday season, the Bearista cup and some other items sold out fast,” the company said in a statement to the New York Post.
In the wake of this unexpected demand for bear cups, Walmart has swooped in with its own lineup of bear-themed dupes that channel Starbucks’ beloved Bearista design, albeit without the coffee chain’s logo or the in-store stampedes.
The best part? These dupes are actually in stock online, so you can add one to your cart without coordinating a tactical shopping plan and worrying about long lines. Walmart’s rendition is made from glass, just like the original, and holds 20 fluid ounces, the same size as a Starbucks venti. Most importantly, it still has a colorful blue hat perched on top of the bear’s head.
The grocery store does have a variety of product pages that feature slightly different versions of the bear cup copycat from different vendors, so just make sure you’re purchasing one that’s made of glass and holds 20 ounces, if desired. Several of the store’s options fit the bill, and their prices may vary slightly.
Walmart’s bear cup will cost you around $22. That’s still than most of us would expect to pay for a single glass cup, but it’s a notable discount compared with Starbucks’ original price of $29.95. (And it’s a far better deal than the resale prices for the originals, which are going for hundreds and in some cases thousands of dollars.)
It’s worth mentioning that the 20-ounce bear design — from Starbucks or Walmart — comes with one notable drawback: It doesn’t fit in most car cup holders. One
even demonstrated the struggle in a now-viral video, attempting (and failing) to wedge her Starbucks bear cup into a holder.
Whether it fits in a cup holder or not, we’ll be happy to have this winter-themed cup while cozying up during the holidays. When it comes to accessibility, Walmart often wins, and the major retailer is proving that to be true once again, all thanks to a cute bear cup.
