A New Iranian Drug To Treat Leukemia

The drug, which bears the name “Medowens,” was produced to treat acute myeloid leukemia (AML), which is a type of… Leukemia It affects the bone marrow cells responsible for producing blood cells.

The drug is also used to treat a rare disease called “systemic mast cell inflammation,” which is a disorder that causes a type of immune system cell known as “mast cells” to multiply abnormally within the body, leading to chronic inflammation and tissue damage.

This technology relies on mixing the drug with special oils and compounds that, when they enter the digestive system, are transformed into very small nanoparticles, the diameter of which does not exceed 100 nanometers, which facilitates their absorption into the blood faster and efficiently. The result is increased effectiveness of the drug and reduced side effects compared to conventional medications.

Medowens is the only global drug approved to treat patients with leukemia with the FLT3 gene mutation or systemic inflammatory mast cell disease, and its use has helped extend the average life of patients by up to five years, giving them a better chance of undergoing bone marrow transplants.

One of the most prominent features of this new drug is that it significantly reduces the cost of treatment. While the price of the foreign version is about one and a half billion tomans, the Iranian drug is offered locally at a monthly price of approximately 25 million tomans only, which makes it a available option for patients inside Iran.

The researchers point out that this achievement represents an advanced step in the field of nano applications in medicine, and opens the door to the production of high-tech local medicines capable of competing with global treatments, especially in the field of combating cancer.
