NEED TO KNOW

  • A mom-to-be is unsure whether she and her husband should commit to a mortgage or stay put in their small apartment
  • She says their current place is cramped, but it’s owned by a family member who doesn’t charge them rent
  • The woman shared her story on a community forum, where opinions were divided on what she should do

A mom-to-be says she’s torn about whether she and her husband should stay in their small-yet-affordable apartment or spend on “a big mortgage” to upgrade their space.

The woman detailed her story on the “Am I Being Unreasonable” forum on the U.K.-based community site Mumsnet.com, a place where woman can go to seek life advice on a range of topics. In her post, she shared that she is in the “very early stages of pregnancy,” but that she and her husband are “starting to think ahead.”

She went on to share that they currently live in a “lovely” two-bedroom apartment “owned by family,” adding that they don’t pay rent and can stay as long as they’d like. However, it’s not theirs to “keep or sell.”

“It’s perfect for us as a couple, but not too baby friendly,” she explained, saying it was located on the second floor without an elevator or a place to leave a stroller. The woman added that space would be “tight once the baby arrives” as both she and her husband work from home.

She explained that staying put in the apartment would mean “minimal outgoing (expenses),” whereas investing in a home would require a mortgage in addition to using up all their savings.

“We’d like than one (child), so moving and (a) big mortgage is inevitable at some point,” she continued, adding, “(Am I being unreasonable) to think we should just go for it now, or would it be madness to give up our current situation before we absolutely have to?”

Opinions were divided over what the parents-to-be should do.

“I’d stay where you are and save as much as possible while pregnant/child (is still) small,” one person said.

“Stay as long as you can and use this fantastic opportunity to save up,” agreed someone else.

Yet another person opined, “You’d be insane to give up your current situation before you have to.” They continued, pointing out that not having to pay rent allows the young family to save “a lot of money towards the house purchase” when the time is right.

“Do it now. Much easier to move and house hunt without a baby! Also if you both work from home, things are going to start feeling very tight when (maternity) leave ends,” one person said.

“I would want my child to have the stability of a home I own,” another user added.
