Kim Petras is ready to rage.
Before pop star released a new music video for her single “Freak It” on Wednesday, Nov. 11, she chatted with PEOPLE about filming it in Paris — and her next era.

Petras first released the track in July, but her friend and creative director-makeup artist Loftjet convinced her to shoot a self-funded video while she was overseas for Paris Fashion Week this fall.
“It came together really last minute. My friends that I’ve met at parties and artists that I’ve met were like, ‘We’re going to f—ing do it, and we have no budget, and we don’t care,’” Petras tells PEOPLE of the impromptu brainstorm for the video, which Petras self-funded and includes fan-captured footage.
To capture the spirit of the party banger, the Grammy winner and her friends filmed the “Freak It” video during an actual night out clubbing at Les Bains.

“They let us film there, and we just had an insane night,” she says. “It was a truly freaky night. We really partied and filmed it all, and it feels real and raw and crazy.”
The pop star and her crew stayed out until 6 a.m., Petras says, and she still sat front-row for a runway presentation the day after — hangover be damned.

“I had another fashion show to go to, so it was just pulling through. But I feel like I’m pretty good at being hungover and still doing my job and posing,” Petras says. “It doesn’t prohibit me from doing stuff, so I’ve learned how to be hungover.”

Paris has always been an inspiring city for Petras.

“Some of the greatest music that I listen to comes from France. French electro is just one of my all time favorite genres that’s given me endless inspiration,” she says. “And the shows that I’ve played there — the last one, Jean Paul Gaultier was there, all the designers were in the front row, and it was so cool just to see the support from the fashion world because I think that’s one of the first communities that’s accepted me before even people in music accepted me or people in pop. Fashion was there first.”
“Freak It” is one of three singles Petras has released to tease her forthcoming album, which she hasn’t announced yet; it follows “Polo” and preceded her latest single “I Like Ur Look.” Still, these tracks don’t offer fans the full picture of the album.

“I feel like the songs that are out right now really were designed to throw everyone off, especially ‘Polo,’” Petras says. “A lot of people are just like, ‘Oh, it’s such a stupid song about a shirt.’ And it’s really about the Beverly Hills Polo Lounge where deals in the music industry are being made. I’m pretty revealing on that one. So yeah, all the songs are a little, I think, deeper than they’re being given credit for, but that’s fine.”

As she prepares her next album — the follow-up to her 2023 major-label debutFeed the Beast— Petras continues to play into her pop-star persona, even if listeners don’t always understand it.
“I’m a pop bitch, and that’s fine. It’s like this struggle sometimes because I’ve always wanted to be like Mariah Carey a little bit, where it’s like I write all the songs, I’m super in every detail, I co-produce all the songs … but then I want to be on stage and be a hot dumb bimbo and be like, ‘Eh, I don’t do s—.” But I do do everything myself; I just like to portray myself that way.”

Adds Petras: “I’m shedding that a little bit, but I’m also always going to play with it because I love it, and I don’t want to intellectualize myself to the point where it’s like I’m explaining all the stuff to you.”
