We Visited The Secret KFC Diner Inside An Abandoned Sydney Tunnel

Behind a nondescript door in the Sydney CBD lies the entrance to an abandoned tunnel beneath one of the city’s busiest train stations.

Inside, a fast food giant has created a secret pop-up diner serving fried chicken, burgers, chips and soft drinks – and it’s all absolutely free.

The catch? You have to find it.

For just two days in the tunnels below Wynyard station, KFC Australia has set up an 80s-themed experience to celebrate the launch of season five of hit Netflix series Stranger Things.

The Hawkins Fried Chicken diner is open to the public on Friday November 28 and Saturday November 29 for two sessions: midday to 2.30pm, and 4.30pm to 10pm.

But with no entryway signs or displays, the only way in is to be in the know.

Cluey KFC fans who pre-registered for the event were given instructions on how to find it – but all tickets allocated for pre-event registration were quickly exhausted.

However, this exclusive activation also accepts walk-ins on a first come, first served basis, so anyone who cracks the clues might get lucky.

KFC Australia has created an 80s-inspired Hawkins Fried Chicken diner, located in an abandoned tunnel within Sydney’s CBD

The pop-up restaurant, inspired by the new season of Stranger Things, will be open for two days on Friday November 28 and Saturday November 29. Entry and food are free. The catch? You have to find it…

To find the hush-hush pop-up, start at the Carrington Street entrance of Wynyard station and take the escalator down one flight.

On the wall opposite a big-name supermarket, you’ll spot several plain and unmarked doors. Look for the one beside a digital billboard displaying a KFC ad.

There’s no signage or hint of what’s behind it. But knock on the heavy door and see if you’re one of the lucky few to be granted entry…

(Warning: Spoilers ahead. If you want to keep the surprise, skip down to the ***.)

Taking inspiration from Stranger Things, which is set in the 1980s, walking into this activation is like stepping through a timewarp dripping in nostalgia. But at the same time, there’s also something a little ‘strange’ about it, if you will.

The first area channels the 80s aesthetic with a display that includes a cassette boombox, retro KFC chicken buckets and old-style TVs. But the buckets are fashioned in an upside down arrangement and the TVs are blasting snow static.

The next space will give Stranger Things fans a kick. A glowing neon wall sign heralds the show’s highly anticipated upcoming fifth and final season. Neatly lined up in front of it? Racks of sweet BMX cruisers and long handlebar bikes. Welcome to Hawkins, Indiana.

Moving on, festoon lighting leads you to the main event: The Hawkins Fried Chicken diner.

There are two burger options for visitors to choose from – including the new limited edition Upside Double Down. Inspired by Stranger Things, this inverted burger has two Original Crispy fillets on the outside and a burger bun in the middle

The atmosphere is like stepping into a KFC restaurant from yesteryear with red dining booths, red and white patterned wallpaper, retro posters, vintage arcade games and even a jukebox blasting 80s tunes.

Each visitor is given a food coupon to take to the diner counter where there are two burger options to choose from.

It’s hard to go past the limited edition Upside Double Down, inspired by Stranger Things. This inverted creation features two of KFC’s iconic Original Crispy fillets on the outside, sandwiching a middle comprised of a soft bun, crispy bacon, cheese and a generous serving of KFC’s brand-new and gently spicy Stranger Sauce.

Alternatively, there’s the revived KFC classic 80s menu item in The Works Burger – complete with a pineapple ring.

Every visitor also receives a side of Original Recipe chicken, chips and a soft drink. And just confirming again – yes, it’s all absolutely free.

After you’ve enjoyed your meal and a soaked in the diner’s retro vibes, staff will invite you to traverse the next stage of the urban adventure. Here is where things start to get a little eerie.

Exiting the diner means stepping into The Upside Down, which is the mysterious and dangerous parallel dimension from the TV show.

Across dim, abandoned tunnels, moody lights and projected video create an air of unease. At the end of the first tunnel, duck through an entryway and sense the sinister presence of the show’s baddie, the Demogorgon, with its slime-wrapped tentacles snaking through the display.

Things get a little eerie once you exit the diner and walk through the abandoned tunnels. Yep, like in the TV show, you’ve now crossed over into The Upside Down

The final section shows its devastation: eerie classroom lockers, street signs and a fence displaying with a ‘restricted area’ sign are all cocooned by slimy tentacles.

As you make your way towards the exit, naturally the sound of Kate Bush’s ‘Running Up That Hill’ booms around you.

So what would we rate this experience out of ten? That’s an 11.
