When a bride was left without dresses for her bridesmaids, a popular retailer came to the rescue.
When New Jersey bride Kindness Oliver was getting ready to walk down the aisle on the morning of her wedding, she was met with a major mishap — the designer she hired to make custom dresses for her bridesmaids had not finished in time.

After picking out coordinating black dresses, the bridesmaids managed to make it back just in time for the ceremony. Oliver told PEOPLE exclusively that the wedding party had just hours of turnaround time.
“I hired a designer I’ve worked with for years — someone I trusted deeply because he had always come through for me in the past,” Oliver tells PEOPLE. “He created my engagement outfit, dresses for my mother, my brother’s prom suit, and mentored designers I’ve worked with. Because of that history, I trusted him to create eight custom looks for my wedding.”
She continues, “Despite starting the process in November and doing fittings in January, very little was actually constructed. On the morning of my wedding, the bridesmaids’ dresses were still unfinished — just loose pieces of fabric with no zippers, seams, straps or structure. My family even went to his home to retrieve everything, but the bags they brought back were filled with incomplete, shredded fabric pieces.”
“It was heartbreaking and caused complete chaos the morning of my wedding,” Oliver adds.

She credited Bloomingdale’s with “saving” the wedding.
“My bridesmaids walked in wearing robes and explained the crisis, and the staff immediately went into action. They pulled black dresses, sizes, options — everything. They were kind, fast and truly stepped in like a rescue team. Because of them, my bridesmaids were able to walk down the aisle,” Oliver tells PEOPLE.
Oliver, who works as an event planner and creative director for her own companyKindness Entertainment Inc.credits herself with being a “planner,” lending to her shock at this turn of events.
“I was devastated. I cried multiple times. My bridesmaids cried. My best friend cried. I’m a planner — I usually have backup plans for everything — but this was something I never imagined. I spent over $25,000 on photography and videography to document my wedding, and I missed all my ‘getting ready’ moments. No photos in pajamas, no morning portraits, nothing,” she says of the moment she discovered the unfinished dresses.

Amid the chaos, the bride missed her cocktail hour, and the photographer was unable to snap getting-ready portraits. “I still haven’t emotionally recovered from that loss,” Oliver continues.
In spite of the mishap, Oliver still found joy in her wedding day.
“Once I finally made it down the aisle and saw my husband, the ceremony became the first moment of peace I’d had all day,” Oliver explains. “Everything around me felt heavy and chaotic until that very moment — but when I locked eyes with him, I finally felt grounded again. It reminded me of why I was there, and it gave me a moment of emotional relief before the rest of the day unfolded.”

“What breaks my heart the most is that even though my wedding was visually everything I dreamed of — the production, the custom décor, the structures we built inside the venue, the personalized touches, the luxury details — I didn’t get to truly experience it the way I planned,” Oliver says.
“I didn’t get the joy of the morning. I didn’t get the photos. I didn’t get the calm before the celebration. I didn’t get my cocktail hour, which I curated so intentionally. I paid for an experience I watched other people enjoy, but I didn’t get to feel it myself.”

Oliver adds that she “felt like I was walking through my own wedding with the aftershock of everything that went wrong.”

“Even as the night continued, and even though I smiled and showed up where I needed to, the emotional damage from the morning followed me. It’s something I still feel today — not because the wedding wasn’t beautiful, but because so many of the moments that mattered most were taken from me,” Oliver tells PEOPLE.
