Industrys Kit Harington Reveals The Hidden Rules Of Dressing Like An Aristocrat – From Socks That Signal Youre An Old Etonian To The Barbour Jacket Faux Pas That Says Youre Not One Of Us
He plays the aristocratic CEO Henry Muck in Industry, but according to Kit Harington dressing like a member of the upper classes is less a matter of money, and about following the sartorial ‘hidden rules’.
Speaking to GQ ahead of the highly-anticipated fourth season of the banking industry drama, he explained the style cues that signal wealth, which have nothing to do with the brands you’re wearing.
Kit – whose father, Sir David Harington is a baronet, and related to 16th century Scottish politician Henry Dundas, 1st Viscount Melville – said that even socks can indicate whether you ‘belong’ in rarefied circles.

Suggesting that only those imbued with the confidence of attending Britain’s top public school, can pull off mismatched socks and make it work, he explained: ‘If you are from Eton, you can wear odd socks, but if you’re from Winchester, you have to wear the same type of socks.
‘Or no one wears new Barbour jackets, it has to be battered, because you wouldn’t buy something new, because that’s showing off, and also it’s nouveau.
‘It shows you haven’t been shooting your whole life. All of these very specific rules in clothing and appearance that signal to someone else that you’re part of the gang or you’re not.’
He added that if you get it wrong, people will be perfectly polite, but they will know ‘you’re not one of us’.

His character Henry, a recent addition to the programme, encapsulates such a world with what Kit has himself described as tinged with poshness and self-depreciation alike – although, telling Vulture that ‘on the surface, he’s such a p**ck’.

‘In the UK, we’ve all met someone like Henry,’ he said. ‘My task, my major objective with him, is how do you make that guy sympathetic?’
Part of that, he continued, is understanding the world he comes from, which is ‘entrenched into who he is’.
‘The British class system is designed to be eternal – and he can’t escape it,’ the actor concluded.
Kit – who also shared that he had found himself beginning to dress like Henry in his personal life – has had a hectic beginning to the year, as he and wife Rose Leslie have suffered a break–in at their £2million country estate in Suffolk.

‘Everyone knows Kit and Rose are here and we’re proud that they chose our little bit of the countryside to live in,’ she said.
‘But we’re also very protective of their privacy, so it was upsetting when we heard that they’d been broken into, along with some other local people.
‘Unfortunately, rural crime is just a part of life out here these days and everyone is much on their guard than they used to be.’

He bought the thatched mediaeval home in Suffolk in 2017, and married Scots–born aristocrat Rose, granddaughter of a Baron, the following year. The nuptials took place near her family seat at Wardhill Castle, Aberdeenshire, with many of their GoT co–stars in attendance.
