LAURA CRAIKs Golden Globes Special Majestic, Modest – Gowns That Say Hollywood Glamour Is Back… And Those Who Didnt Get The Memo
When even a Kardashian exhibitionist like Kylie Jenner looks relatively chaste, you know that something is up. Covered up, to be precise.
The most shocking thing about this year’s Golden Globes? That they were barely shocking at all – certainly when compared to last year’s flesh-fest, where cleavage ruled and near-nudity swept the board.
Throughout 2025, countless stars took to the red carpet in ‘naked’ dresses, their fabrics so sheer that, bar some judiciously placed sequins, many looked as though they were wearing nothing at all. But fashion’s pendulum has swung in a different direction entirely this year. Flesh is out, modesty is in.
It was in 2024 that the phrase ‘very demure, very mindful’ became an internet trend, after thousands of women posted videos of themselves embracing tasteful takes on femininity.

Two years later, the look seems to have reached the red carpet. If the Globes are anything to go by, naked dressing is now a no-no, with the few who did embrace the ‘less is ’ approach, including Jennifer Lopez, Jennifer Lawrence and Julia Robertslooking somewhat out of step.
Which is good news for those who love clothes, and prefer the focus to be on fit and fabric, rather than on fitness and phwoar. Gone is the trend for flaunting toned bodies like a badge of honour. Instead, the nominees opted for actual fashion creations: gowns of majesty and modesty, whose appearance owed to traditional Hollywood glamour than to the modern obsession with baring all.
No colour is chaste or conservative than white, and no star is in its thrall than Pamela Anderson, 58, whose simple white shirt and matching evening skirt by Ferragamo offered a masterclass in understated modesty of the sort that has defined her post-Baywatch renaissance.
Also in white was The Devil Wears Prada actress Emily Blunt, 42, who chose a slender Louis Vuitton gown with a white capelet, and Claire Danes, 46, in a simple sequin sheath dress, designed by Zac Posen for Gap Studio.

Few labels encapsulate classic Hollywood glamour quite as effortlessly as Chanel. With its new creative director, Matthieu Blazy, riding high, the French fashion house was always destined to be a popular choice this awards season.
Selena Gomez, 33, looked flawless in a custom Chanel black velvet gown with a white feather detail. Best actress winner Rose Byrne, 46, meanwhile, bucked the monochrome trend in a green Chanel satin dress whose 1970s feel was amplified by a flicked hairstyle.
Amal Clooney, 47, also provided a splash of colour, arriving on the arm of her nominated husband George in a vintage red gown by Balmain first shown in 1957. She was one of a slew of stars who chose to make her back a focal point, rather than her cleavage.

Of course, there are always those who swim against the tide. In see-through mesh. The most striking of these was Jennifer Lawrence, 35, who wore a skin-tight nude gown strategically embroidered with pale pink flowers and green leaves.
It was an unexpected choice, not simply because it represented the most ‘naked’ moment of her career, but because it was designed by Sarah Burton at Givenchy.
Lawrence is a brand ambassador for Dior, and usually wears it on the red carpet. That she chose Givenchy was certainly a ringing endorsement of Burton, a favourite of the Princess of Wales during her 13-year tenure as creative director of Alexander McQueen.

Both Givenchy and Dior fall under the stable of LVMH, and it’s likely owner Bernard Arnault gave his blessing to Lawrence’s choice, knowing this gown would boost the lesser-known Givenchy’s profile under a new designer.
Not one to shy away from a big reveal, Jennifer Lopez’s vintage fishtail gown by Jean-Louis Scherrer was less of a surprise. Only a few embroidered fronds of applique protected her modesty. Perhaps the 56-year-old hoped to replicate the moment when the plunging Versace green gown she wore to the 2000 Grammys went viral.
For many stars, there was only one way to channel Hollywood glamour, and that was by reaching for that trusted wardrobe staple: black. Joining Kirsten Dunst, 43, in the black camp was Wicked star Ariana Grande, 32, and singer Miley Cyrus, 33.
And then there was Julia Roberts, 58 – one of only a handful of stars whose A-list status has been truly earned. With its plunging neckline, her black velvet gown by Armani Prive was anomalous in making the cleavage a focus. Or was it? On second glance, it transpired that she was keeping things chaste with a strawberry pendant by Swarovski. Very demure, very mindful and very funny – in her own inimitable way.
