The only upside of Baltic temperatures? Knitwear season is in full swing. My current everyday uniform consists of a rotation of hard-working jumpers, and I’ve added a few new styles to my collection this winter courtesy of Marks & Spencer. I normally depend on M&S for my underwear rather than knitwearbut I’ve clearly been missing a trick – sales are soaring, with argyle prints and hairy yarns proving the most in-demand styles.

As I tend to favour a neutral palette – think camel funnel necks and cosy grey cashmere – I wasn’t convinced I’d find knits I really liked that weren’t simply basics. But after visiting my local M&S and trying on almost every jumper in their 200-strong stock, I can report there are some seriously stylish designs well worth snapping up.

Starting with a classic argyle. This print is a perennial favourite at this time of year, and I love it in this muted palette of grey, beige and cream (£36). And with the cold snap continuing, you can add a matching argyle scarf for maximum Celtic chic.

This textured funnel-neck jumper (£46) is what I imagine wearing a cloud might feel like – ultra-soft and wonderfully cosy. The silhouette is deliberately loose and forgiving, perfect if you indulged a little too enthusiastically in December.

Green is my favourite colour, so I was immediately drawn to this ribbed funnel neck. Made from a blend of merino wool and cashmere, it’s now reduced to £35.99 in the sale. The quality of the fabric and the attention to detail on the cuffs mean it looks far expensive.

Italian label Marni produces beautiful mohair jumpers that I frequently lust over, though they come with an £800 price tag. That’s why I was delighted to come across this striped wool funnel-neck jumper (£48): it has a Marni-esque fluffy texture and oversized fit, without breaking the bank.

M&S cashmere is some of the best on the high street. It’s affordable, machine-washable and reliably good quality. This simple roll neck is under £100, and I know I’ll get a huge amount of wear out of it, layered under dresses when it’s cold or tucked into jeans.

Finding a necklace that suits a jumper’s neckline can sometimes prove tricky. But M&S is one step ahead when it comes to accessorising knitwear. This cream crew-neck jumper comes with a built-in chain detail around the neckline – just take care when washing and spritzing perfume to avoid tarnishing.
