An elderly cruise passenger required an emergency medical evacuation while sailing off the coast of Mexico last week.
The 76-year-old American woman fractured her left femur after a fall, according to a translated Jan. 1 statement from the Sixteenth Naval Zone of Mexico’s Secretariat of the Navy.
On Thursday, authorities at the Naval Station for Search, Rescue and Maritime Surveillance (ENSAR) in Lázaro Cárdenas received a request to evacuate the passenger off theViking Skycruise ship. At the time, the Viking Oceans vessel was sailing off the coast of the western Mexican state of Michoacán.
According to the department, a “Defender-type vessel from the Lázaro Cárdenas ENSAR was immediately dispatched with specialized personnel and naval medical personnel on board.”

When rescue personnel arrived, they “examined and prepared the woman on a stretcher” before boarding her onto the patrol boat.
After arriving safely on land, authorities transferred the woman, who was in stable medical condition, to a Civil Protection ambulance. The passenger was subsequently brought to a local hospital for specialized medical attention.

No further details regarding the passenger’s conditions were released.
Viking Ocean Cruises did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
According to CruiseMapperthe vessel is currently on a 17-day, one-way voyage from Fort. Lauderdale, Fla. to Los Angeles. The sailing, which embarked on Dec. 19, is set to conclude on Jan. 5. Stops included Cozumel, Mexico; Cartagena, Colombia; the Panama Canal; Puntarenas, Costa Rica and Acajutla, El Salvador.

According to officials, the woman went overboard approximately 40 miles northeast of Sabana, Cuba, on Thursday. During the search, cruise ship personnel and the coast guard examined over 690 square miles.

In a statement shared with theOrlando SentinelHolland America confirmed crews “initiated search and rescue procedures” following the incident.
Holland America and the Coast Guard did not respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment regarding the missing passenger.
