If I see one ‘gifts for mum’ section on a retailer’s website that includes a hand cream in floral packaging, a mug with ‘mumma’ written on it or a lavender-scented mesh bag to put in my sock drawer, I will scream.
As a 37-year-old mother of two, I definitely fall into the ‘mum’ category, but I’m always surprised when I see the range of gifts that are supposedly aimed at me. Is that really how the world sees me?
To be honest, I’d be very happy for my kids to give me one of their sweet little drawings or paintings made from splodgy handprints for Christmas – it’s certainly preferable to an ‘I love mummy’ teddy or similar.

Triangle scarves are chic, practical and an easy way to add some punch to your outfit. I’d be very happy with this vibrant red number.

Summer in Worcestershire, 1577. Eliza Litton, a talented artist, is in love with childhood friend, Francis. But her tyrannical father, who rules the household with insults and fists, has other ideas. As summer comes to an end, Francis vanishes after a drunken night at the inn and Eliza’s father forces her to marry a gentleman, Edmund.
