Steven Gerrard Questions Trent Alexander-Arnolds Liverpool Exit

Debating Trent Alexander-Arnold‘s transfer to Real Madrid, Steven Gerrard explained why he believes Liverpool fans struggle to understand the move.

Alexander-Arnold’s summer switch from Liverpool to Madrid has been debated to the Bernabeu and back, so we won’t bore you with the argument again.

However, it is worth taking note of what Gerrard says on the topic, given he turned down moves to then better teams while captaining his boyhood club.

Comparing his Chelsea rejection in 2004, Steve McManaman’s free transfer from Anfield to Madrid in 1999 and Trent’s 2025 move, Gerrard told

“I’d really never want to interfere in anyone’s decision from a footballer’s perspective. Of course you do as a manager because you want to protect yourself, your team and the club.

“I was probably somewhere in the middle for that. In terms of Steve McManaman, (he) made the right decision.

“The Liverpool team he was playing in wasn’t competitive, I wouldn’t say, and I think it was a huge jump from that Liverpool team to Real Madridso from a football perspective that was a no-brainer.

“I think nine out of 10 people would probably jump into that and I think, in time, Liverpool fans really understood that one.

“I think Trent’s very different because he was playing in arguably one of the best Liverpool teams ever; one of the favourites to compete for the Champions Leaguethey’re winning leagues.

“Trent had in the palm of his hands what I craved for all of my career, and still looking back now and I wish I achieved what he had in the palm of his hand.”

Alexander-Arnold was widely booed when he returned to Anfield with Madrid, coming off the bench in Los Blancos’ 1-0 loss to Liverpool in November.

The mural of him in L4 was also defaced with graffiti calling him a ‘rat’, treatment McManaman didn’t receive when he left.

Gerrard, however, was subject to outrage when rumours circulated that he would be joining Jose Mourinho.

“I think Trent’s decision was probably a lot difficult than Macca’s,” Gerrard added.

“Mine was probably somewhere in the middle where we was competing for domestic cups and we were in the conversation, but Man United, Arsenal and Chelsea came and were much stronger than the team I was playing in so it was tempting.

“Financially, they’re offering you double your money. ”

Thankfully, Gerrard stayed and went on to win the Champions League the following season, becoming a Liverpool legend and one of the world’s most-revered midfielders.

Alexander-Arnold has started just five times in La Liga since his exit, with injuries and underwhelming form hampering his start to life in Spain.
